Awareness Raising Event on Disaster Risk Reduction
On July 14, Save the Children Georgia CO organized an earthquake and fire disaster simulation at public school for children with vision impairment. The event was organized to raise children’s awareness on disaster risk reduction. As part of the said activities, fire drill was launched and a brigade of firefighters evacuated academic personnel from the building. The event was organized within the frames of the inclusive disaster risk reduction project funded by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and as a result of cooperation with the Emergency Management Service of Georgia. Head of the Civil Protection Policy Unit of ECHO attended the simulation.
Starting from 2012, Save the Children Georgia has been implementing projects aimed at disaster risk reduction. Said projects aim at ensuring that state policy and strategic documents in the area of disaster risk reduction reflect the principles of inclusiveness, non-discrimination and protection and promotion of the rights of children. As part of the DRR related projects, capacity building activities for all representatives of central and local government have been implemented; as part of public awareness raising activities, video lessons have been shot and placed at Silknet “Home School” web-portal. National Resilience Platform that brings together the members of governmental and non-governmental sectors was also established as a result of cooperation of Save the Children and Emergency Management Service. Its first meeting will be held in the near future.
